Italy Uncovered is a festival of contemporary Italian dramaturgy that has took place at the 503 Theatre in London on 17th and 18th November 2019.
The festival was conceived by Edward Fortes, Anna Landi and Camilla Brison.
Italy Uncovered wants to introduce a generation of young Italian authors still hidden from UK, and extend the vision of a country to another country that is not limited to cultural stereotypes or inviolable sacred monsters.
The festival embraces the two meanings of the word: in the urban language, uncovered refers to something revealed. In the suburban language, and particularly in the Roman dialect, uncovered is used as a synonym for "not considered".
We know that in UK, if you think about Italian theatre, Pirandello, Dario Fo and the Commedia dell'arte immediately come to mind. The idea of this festival was the interest of Anna, Edward and Camilla to give access to the English public, through theatrical writing, to a new generation of authors who are not yet mainstream despite representing excellence.
Italy Uncovered is a review of five mise en space of contemporary Italian dramaturgy acted by English artists. It represents a meeting of cultures and a step for the diffusion of a generation of new Italian authors in a country, UK, strongly interested in contemporary dramaturgy, but which has access to very few of the Italian one.
The festival has involved translators, directors, actors and other English workers and aims to establish a regular artistic exchange between theatrical authors of which this festival is the first stage.
The UK supporters of the project are the Italian Cultural Institute in London, Prof. Stefano Jossa of the Royal Holloway University, Prof.ssa Campofreda and Prof.ssa Marta Niccolai of UCL, and Mr Richard Northern of the Italian-British Society.
In Italy, the project is supported by the Riccione Theatre Prize.
