“No Land Lady was written and has been staged with Giorgione's La Tempesta (The Storm) in mind.
The text acts like a prism for the four characters’ story. I was struck by the absence of linear time and a number of dreamlike references in the text, which reveal dreams the characters might have, and what they might want as a result. The writer has thus disrupted the idea of consequentiality and created a combination of truth and alternative truth that allows you to watch, rather than to try to understand. As a result, I have tried to provide a visual language that is more bewildering than it is beautiful; and the same heterogeneous quality that I saw in Giorgione's painting is what I am looking for onstage. This is also true of the characters, so that the eye does not simply settle on something familiar, but the whole idea of the audience’s relationship to the performance is renewed.”
